THE EDITOR
... When I first met him, I was unaware of his reluctance to discuss his “past life” as a recorder player. During our brief interview, he seemed disinterested in my questions. Yet, he kindly suggested we could converse about other topics "anything but... personal " I couldn’t help but burst into laughter, perhaps because I was about to breach that boundary. Then, unexpectedly, he took my arm, locked eyes with me, and whispered, “I’ll share something personal, that is your wish: my name is Franciscus…”
His laughter followed, soft and enigmatic...

...I remember a statement of Brüggen’s during an interview. He was asked why with all his musical talents he remained in the recorder world. After a long pause, waiting till the auditorium became very quiet (timing was never his weak point), he asked his questioner one of his own, “Do you yourself play the recorder?” After an affirmative nod of the listener “During all your times of playing the recorder, did you ever just get tears in your eyes?” whereupon the hall hushed down even further...
